Backyard Babies - Making Enemies Is Good (2001) Retail CD
It's not rocket science, or even the unit-shifting efficiency of nu-metal, but then that's the point. On Making Enemies Is Good, Stockholm's Backyard Babies play the kind of grubby bar room rock & roll that kept the drugs and groupies flowing for the New York Dolls, Guns 'N' Roses and, most pertinently, Finnish rockers Hanoi Rocks. In fact, the shadow of the latter looms large over this album. "Payback" is Hanoi classic "Taxi Driver" taken on a night of kerb-crawling and dirty sex. "Colours" has a moody romanticism worthy of Hanoi songwriter Andy McCoy. And singer Nicke Borge displays a lip-curlingmore… petulance reminiscent of Hanoi's flamboyant frontman Mike Monroe. All of which makes for a slightly disturbing but mostly exhilarating experience, as any band that can manage even half of Hanoi's glory has to be worth trading your misgivings in for. Highlights include "Heaven", two and a half minutes of surf harmonies and infectious pop sensibilities, and "Painkiller", which takes a long, lonely walk in the pouring rain to provide one of those big-hearted ballads that made Guns 'N' Roses their millions. The guitar solo itself goes on for several days and just cries out for a graveyard and a thunderstorm. If you're smiling with recognition right now, then this album is for you. --Ian Watson
