Melanie - Paled By Dimmer Light (2004) Retail CD
Another new album from the tireless Melanie Safka. This woman simply refuses to give in. And this is not just a further repackaging of greatest hits. The liner notes stress that there's "something new" here, and there certainly is. Admittedly, two recent tracks - "And We Fall" and "You Call Yourself A Writer" are making second appearances, but everything else is either brand new or a re-interpretation. Of the latter, "The Ballad Of Crazy Love" gives a somewhat more laidback (if that's possible) feel to Crazy Love's title track. And "Nothing Is Real" is an absolutely unbelievable re-working of "more…Hearing The News", first heard yonks ago on the second Carnegie Hall album. Here, the track starts with a montage of scratchy, hissy extracts before bursting into the full splendour of this state-of-the-art version, like an old black-and-white movie suddenly breaking out into colour. Highlights among the remaining COMPLETELY NEW songs are the album's opener "Elements"; an interesting version of U2's "Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For"; and "Deserts Of Blue", a concluding 7-minute blistering instrumental (we've not really had any of those since the "All The Right Noises" soundtrack) in which son Beau Jarred displays his astonishing virtuoso guitar playing - more notes per second than seems humanly possible. Melanie fans - of whom there are still a ridiculous number out there - will not have anything like a complete collection without this album. The only trouble is that recent releases seem to be aimed ONLY at fans (logical, I suppose) but wouldn't it be great if Melanie could break back into the mainstream again. This material would knock so much other inferior stuff out of the water, if only there was adequate exposure and promotion. Without them, Melanie remains her fans' most closely guarded secret - but then, that's probably at the heart of her appeal.
