Lee Morgan - Tom Cat (2006) Retail CD
One of his final recordings before the commercial success of 'Sidewinder' condemned the remainder of his career to the production of cheesy lift music, this is perhaps the last album (along with 'Search for the New Land') where we hear the true Lee Morgan. Cocky, Sassy, and full of the wry humour that had been his trademark in the early to mid sixties, 'Tom Cat' has all the sparkle associated with Lee morgan's best work. The themes, as ever, exude warmth, wit and personality; from the Folk-song like 'Twice around' to the pink panther-esque title track, each number has a character uniqely its ownmore…. The personnel line up - Mcoy Tyner, Jackie Mclean and a host of Blue note regulars make this a disc which cannot be missed. This recording is from an era when the popularity of jazz was maybe beginning to wane, and many of the dull, formulaic offerings from technically proficient but soulless automatons of the day demonstrate why. Against such a backdrop, this, from one of the most distinctive musicians of the 50's and 60's, stands out as the gem that it is.
