Andy Sheppard - Learning to Wave (1998) Retail CD
Instruments are, perhaps, like children. If you have some, unless something goes terribly wrong, you will love them unquestioningly. If you're lucky, you will, entirely separately, quite like them as well. Andy Sheppard has always seemed to be a musician who quite likes the saxophone, a relationship which is manifest on this very appealing recording. That said, his earlier popularity all too often seemed to be marred by a certain penchant for soft options, a lack of spontaneity and a less-than-adventurous structural sense--when six notes predicted a seventh, you could be pretty sure that thatmore… note was what you'd get. Happily, all of this goes out of the window here. The album has an intriguing, if rather musoid, premise, in that the music on it came about as a result of Sheppard learning how to play the guitar and finding that this enlivened and re-informed his compositional approach. The results are more Joe Pass than Joe Strummer, of course, and he wisely sticks to his saxes on the album, which strolls from pastoral mellowness to township bounce with unswerving conviction and grace. --Roger Thomas
