Andromeda - Extension of the Wish (2003) Retail CD
Well, Sweden have done it once again, producing yet another extremely talented and somewhat original progressive metal band. Spearheaded by the virtuosity and musical genius of their 20 (yes, TWENTY!!) year old guitarist, Johan Reinholtz, Andromeda simply oozes with melody, heaviness, technical brilliance and ultra-catchy riffs. It is somewhat difficult to classify their music. It is METAL to begin with, but there is the unique blend of neoclassical, fusion and even rock n' roll (!) influences with an atmospheric outer space concept. Within the first minute of the opening track, The Words Unspokenmore…, you can already get a taste of Johan's tasty guitar solos and riffs. It is evident that their style of prog metal is different from other prog metal bands and each track has great catchy choruses along with killer guitar work. The heaviest and darkest track would be The Deepest of Waters. The crushing opener features plenty of furious guitar riffing along with some great rhythm odd timing and not to mention, plenty of guitar shredding ! Johan incorporates many different techniques and interesting scales into his playing, providing an extremely dynamic mixture of fluid solos throughout the album. Vocal duties on this album is handled by session singer Lawrence Mackrory (ex-Darkane). The minor grudge here is that the singing is pretty mid-ranged with minimal variation. However, they really stand out on Star Shooters Extreme, where the style of singing shows hints of (dare I say it) rapping which gives the album a nice change in mood. The keyboards really shines on this album as it provides a solid atmospheric and rhythmic foundation for each song. As the concept of the album is outer space, you'd get plenty of cool synth effects all over the album creating a mood that is really out of this world. A good deal of the lead guitar work has been played in harmony with the keyboard parts, something extremely difficult and challenging, but Andromeda executes them with such perfection. An excellent showcase of their talents would be the instrumental track Chameleon Carneval which incorporates plenty of metal, fusion and even funk-ish influences. I really like this album as it is so accessible but yet progressive in its own distinct way. I think the band has successfully merged a unique style of atmospheric music along with technique, melody and plenty of tasty shredding. The fact that a death metal label like War Music took an interest in Andromeda initially speaks volume in itself. Look out for the name Johan Reinholtz in the future, because this young lad will definitely be a guitar force to be reckoned with. I believe they have re-released this album in a double CD format with the new vocalist singing on the first album.
