Asian Dub Foundation - Enemy of the Enemy (2003) Retail CD
Asian Dub Foundation wouldn't be the socio-political agitators they are if their music didn't often make difficult listening. Enemy of the Enemy is a dark, claustrophobic, and at times harrowing beats and brimstone challenge to the social conscience, fuelled by domestic violence, misguided retribution and the fallout from globalisation and American foreign policy. True to form, Master D's ragga-rap rhetoric on "Fortress Europe" and "Blowback" is as insightful as it is rabid, hammered home by raging jungle and tablas, searing metallic guitars and sub-bass hum. The truly affecting moments comemore… when they shift down the gears, working trademark Asian-dub into dank dragging laments. "2Faced" is a phenomenally eerie, Portishead-styled indictment of urban decay. Meanwhile, the haunting "1000 Mirrors" has Sinead O'Connor distilling the pain of an abusive relationship into the most tragic of laments. It's not all doom and gloom though. "Power of the Small Massive", for one, uses their frenetic percussion and Indo-rock for an all-consuming celebration rather than attack. Happy or vitriolic, Enemy of the Enemy never fails to stimulate. It confirms that the only act in Britain with the imagination and dexterity to pull off multiculturalism has finally found its stride. --Dan Gennoe
