James LaBrie - Elements of Persuasion (2005) Retail CD
This album is one of the best 'underground' releases so far this year, and is accessible to people who aren't fans of the progressive metal genre due to the music being less complex than, say, Dream Theater. There's a healthy mix of softer and heavier songs on here, and always melodic. The opener, 'Crucify', is one of the heaviest tracks on the album, and evokes 80's Metallica and Train Of Thought-era Dream Theater. The second song, 'Alone', is altogether too nu-metal and sounds very weak compared to the better songs on the album. Sadly it's the first of a weak bunch on the album. 'Freaks' doesnmore…'t have much to enjoy, with simplistic rhyme and rhythm in the lyrics leaving me very underwhelmed by it all. 'Invisible' and 'Lost' suffer from the same problem also.Luckily for us that's the last of the weak bunch, as 'Undecided' begins. Much more depth and intelligence in the lyrical composition, and it makes me think of John Petrucci's lyrics on Dream Theater's 'Awake'. 'Smashed' is the first of the softer ballad-esque songs on the album, and is absolutely fantastic, and to me seems to be about how places change as people grow older. 'Pretender' gets us back to the heavy stuff right from the off, and again deals with what appears to be the twisting of religion, like in Dream Theater's 'In The Name Of God'.'Slightly Out Of Reach' is a song that would work really well as a single, a great mid-tempo power ballad with a lot of piano embellishments. Great song. 'Oblivious', the antipenultimate track, is a bit darker, but doesn't really stand out as a great or bad song. The penultimate track, 'In Too Deep' is really good, very heavy with a dark, brooding chorus which works really well with the overall feel of the album. The album closer, 'Drained' is, again, a heavy song with some really memorable melodies, although the chorus is a bit weak. All in all, this is a good album and worth buying for 'Undecided', 'Smashed' and 'Slightly Out Of Reach'. The musicianship, as you would expect from messrs. Guillory, Sfogli, Beller and of course Mike Mangini on drums, is brilliant, and has a production quality to match.I'd give this 3 and a half stars, rounding up to 4.
