The Smithereens - 11 (1989) Retail CD
Rock & Roll
The Smithereens were doing jangly-60's inflected guitar pop from around the mid 1980s and I think they're a band that few people have paid attention. Not only do bands like Bowling for Soup, Nirvana, Barenaked Ladies & Wondermints owe them a debt, but REM appear to have stolen their thunder (compare 1986's Behind the Wall of Sleep to 1987's The One I Love- REM's breakthrough hit single!). The Smithereens typically defined that college rock sound along with bands like Husker Du, REM , The Replacements & The Vaselines. This was the album that should have broken them, though it was sadly ignoredmore… like the previous classics Especially for You (1986) & Green Thoughts (1988). This album is packed, though makes its point by track 8- where it is clear that Smithereens were becoming extremely formulaic (though this pop formula was an influence on Kurt Cobain, according to several tomes on Nirvana). Some of the songs are a bit similar to previous works- A Room Without a View is too close to 86's Alone at Midnight or 88's Deep Black. There are lots of great songs however- the hit single that never was, A Girl Like You (better than the Troggs song of the same name); the gorgeous Cut Flowers; Yesterday Girl (The Byrds play Rubber Soul in pop heaven) and the Edgar Allen Poe-inspired William Wilson. The greatest song here, one that extends on the jazzy stylings of 1988's Especially for You is Blue Period (nice Picasso reference). Here the great Belinda Carlisle assists on vocals - the song should kill anyone who digs Elvis Costello. Following this album came the disappointing Blow Up and I tuned out; Smithereens II (terrible title, still!) and its predecessors are great albums- hopefully someone can reissue them or compile the definitive collection of this neglected band?
