Wishbone Ash - Argus (1992) Retail CD
Of all the great rock bands of the 1970s, Wishbone Ash were probably the most anonymous. This actually works in their favour because when they were in inspired form, which was usually, the music stood up for itself above all else. The twin lead guitars playing off each other was their most prominent trademark and 'Argus' is the album on which it works best.
This was the first Ash album I heard and it was lent to me with the words, 'It's their best'. I've heard those words many times since from different mouths and it's clearly one of the best rock albums of all time.
'Time Was' lures you in rathermore… than hitting you between the eyes with its quiet opening but the band take off and glide three minutes in and never lose momentum. After another storming workout on 'Sometime World' they opt for a briefer, boogie-oriented interlude with 'Blowin' Free', which comes with an unforgettable opening. Side two of many albums is distinctly the b-side, but not here. There is no b-side. If anything, 'Argus' gains momentum and by the final track, 'Throw Down The Sword', the guitar interplay is sublime.
The live material is a genuine bonus, but the original 'Argus' is so good it warrants acquiring, with or without.
