Talk Talk - London 1986 (1999) Retail CD
Finally, belatedly released (some 12 years after the fact), this live album finds one of the UK's most elusive and enigmatic bands in concert--at the Hammersmith Odeon, no less--and perhaps the most surprising thing is how normal it all sounds, right down to the audience hand clapping along with "Does Caroline Know". The cloistered intensity of their later work--the extraordinary Colour Spring and Laughing Stock albums--was still to come, and this release finds the group poised between the smart-pop of their early singles ("It's My Life", "Such A Shame") and the meditative song-sketches that wouldmore… follow. Certainly, they lose nothing in the shift from studio to stage: Mark Hollis's voice is as beautifully anguished (and as assured) as ever; while the combination of Rupert Black's piano and David Rhodes's corrosive guitar, lends an unexpected bite to "Life's What You Make It" and "Living In Another World". Intriguingly, the liner notes hint at the existence of a concert film, apparently directed by one Noel Oliver; fans can only wait, and hope, that it sees the light of day. --Andrew McGuire
