Whitesnake - The Early Years (2004) Retail CD
At last! It`s only been about twenty years since people started asking for a compilation of the best of early Whitesnake. Having had the late 80`s big hits repackaged numerous times, it is nothing short of justice to have this collection of British blues rock nuggets on one CD, with none of the American sounding metal of later years here to act as a crutch (hence the Union Jack cover). I love "Still of the night" etc. but they have been shoved down our throats lately. It`s about time this stuff got a chance to shine on it`s own.The best thing I noticed about this CD is the swagger it has.more… Last years "Silver anniversary collection" was a solid record of great songs. However, it never swung the way this does. A lot of thought must have gone into the running order as the pacing is great. There are no real gaps between the songs. Also, the absence of anything from the MTV years makes the songs sound better. When played back-to-back, the early stuff really showed it`s age. The earthy production suits this material, though, Whitesnake`s sound would have fitted in just as well at your local pub or the Hammersmith Odeon.Coverdale has also picked the best of what`s on offer, which couldn`t always be said of the "...Anniversary collection". I still find it hard to believe that there was no place for arguably the quintessential early Whitesnake song "Lovehunter". Slide guitar, bouncy basslines, sleazy lyrics, big sing-a-long chorus, all the trademarks of classic `Snake. He has redressed the balance here, thankfully. Also, it`s nice to hear "Trouble", "Rough an` ready" and "Lie down" again after so long. The inclusion of the mighty live version of "Ain`t no love in the heart of the city" is also a bonus as the crowd singing the chorus lifts the song to be the classic it is rightly regarded to be. Elsewhere, "Ready an` willing", "Walking in the shadow of the blues", "Don`t break my heart again" etc. all sound as good as they always were. The only disappointment was that I thought "Gambler" would be the rare Eddie Kramer mix but it`s the British "Slide it in" version. In the linear notes it says that this CD is a companion to the "...Anniversary collection". It makes a worthy addition too, as only two songs are the same on the two albums (although live versions replace studio cuts and vice versa, but that is not a bad thing as it`s good to have both and shows some thought for the real fans). There are also lengthy recollections by old Cov` in the booklet, explaining the comings and goings in the band. Having critisized Mr Coverdale in his song selection for last years compilation, I must thank him for this handy collection of songs I share great memories with.
