Sugarcoma - Becoming Something Else (2002) Retail CD
What a debut!!This is some really impressive, fresh sounding music (albeit with a MAJOR Hendrix influence on “Last Orders”!). The guitar pieces are very cool, as are the drums, especially on “Come Up”. The bass (although I don’t play, so I didn’t pay too much attention to this) sounds good throughout. This is a band that has been compared to Kittie many times, and they don’t like that. At all. Of the lot of them, the only valid comparison is between the singers, and the way they change almost instantly between singing melodically and shouting/growling.more… As opposed to Morgan (from Kittie), Jess (from SugarComa) spends most of her time singing, and manages a much more angelic voice than Morgan when she does. She can’t, however, get quite the same growl from the lower end of her vocal range which is, on the whole, higher than that of Kitties’ front-woman.Lastly, It’s really good to see a British home-grown band that’s so good – the album is well worth the money, and if you don’t believe me, try and grab a few songs from the net (SugarComa actively endorse this kind of thing as a way of getting their music heard) I’d say that “Zero Star” and “Come Up” are the best songs there.
