Steve Harley - Human Menagerie (2004) Retail CD
Just as we were all getting used to Bowie and Bolan, out of leftfield came the remarkable Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel serving up a debut album that was as ahead of its time as Bowie had been or the first two Roxy Music albums. Electric vioiln, full orchestras, tinkling keiboards, pseudo "cabaret" Berlinesque kitsch and Harley's strange voice were presented without a rock guitar to be found. This was glam rock at its most essential, many believe. After all, is there anything more theatrical, more bombastic or more totally out of time as "Sebastian" ??Those who bought the bizarre first singlemore… "Judy Teen", were not disappointed with the songs on here. Similar nuances of thirties decadence, preposterous pomposity in the lyrics and Harley's twisted vowels were this work's calling card. Tracks like "Hidewaway", "Crazy Raver" and "What Ruthy Said" took "rock" music to a new level. Why, even one's parents raised an eyebrow upon hearing some of this album."Sebastian" and "Death Trip" are the two big-production cornerstones of this album. Even now they sound incredibly challenging, especially when one considers this was a year dominated by Slade, Sweet and Gary Glitter.Harley never really got this avant-garde again, although he had more great moments to come. This album is a true one-off. Nothing like it existed at the time, or has done since.
