Steve Hackett - Cured (1989) Retail CD
Derided at the time by prog-rock purists as a 'pop' album, Cured pointed the direction in which many of the dinosausrs of the 1970's would have to go if they were to survive the nuclear winter created by punk. Hackett leapt forward by adopting the, then, revolutionary Linn drum machine, shedding his band and pruning the length of the songs from epic proportion to snappy single length. Even the artwork reflected Hackett's understanding that change was essential - gone were the misty images of his long-time partner Kim Poor to be replaced by what looked like a holiday snap - Hackett enjoying amore… cocktail in some sunny seaside location - to all intents and purposes it looked like Mr Hackett wasn't taking himself too seriously - a terrible crime against prog! The result of this Stalinist purge (or as the title would imply, Hackett curing himself of the Genesis baggage he was carrying) was a beautifully crafted mini-classic. The tunes are highly infectious, the playing as immaculate as ever and the big revelation - Steve can sing! The obligatory acoustic guitar piece is there (Cradle of Swans) as is the heavy instrumental (Air Conditioned Nightmare). Alongside is a set of well crafted songs that demonstrate Hackett's abilities well. 'Learn to turn back time' is absolutely gorgeous and 'Can't let go' should have been a single. So, all you doubters, give 'Cured' a go and appreciate Hackett in a purer form than usual.
