Steppenwolf - Live (1989) Retail CD
"Steppenwolf Live" is one of those albums from my youth that I waited eagerly to have released on CD. Recorded live at various concerts during early 1970, this is a rare live album where the songs tend to sound way better than they do in the studio versions, mainly because he group certainly takes full advantage of making every song longer than what you will find on the original albums. The showpiece of the album is the 9:56 version of "Monster," which crackles with energy and puts the studio version to shame. My favorites on this "double album" have always been the group's lesser known songsmore… such as "Don't Step on the Grass, Sam," "Power Play" and "The Pusher." The only track that does not come off well is "Magic Carpet Ride," but Steppenwolf more than makes up for that with their powerhouse finale version of the classic "Born to be Wild." Many of the tracks benefit from extended keyboard work by Goldy McJohn (e.g., "From Here to There Eventually") and it is clear that John Kay is one of those singers who sounds better working with a live audience. Bottom line: I listen to this live album a lot more than I do the group's "Greatest Hits" CD. Bet you end up doing that too.
