Shea Seger - The May Street Project (2001) Retail CD
Adult Alternative Pop/ Rock
Being born in Fort Worth Texas and growing up in Quitman, a Texan town of just 1,200, hasn't been wasted on Shea Seger. The moody 20-year-old is as close as the 21st century is going to get to a cowgirl. Sweet and girlie, with a southern states drawl and a liking for country blues guitar, she's not to be underestimated; her words are as sly and gritty as her voice, her observations as cutting as her melodies. Sheryl Crow for the jilted generation--dressing the desperate country girl in gripping melodies, hard-bitten attitude and contagious pop--the likes of "Walk On Rainbows" and single "Lastmore… Time" with their savage production of strings and dragging beats are more Bjork than Shania. The May Street Project is the sort of thing that gives country pop a good name. But it's her magical blend of tender campfire backdrops ("Shatterwall"), lo-fi break beats ("Clutch"), desert planes' hip-hop ("Blind Situation") and the Beck "two turntables and an acoustic" attitude ("May Street") that separates Shea's moanings from those of fellow down-beat femmes Apple, Morissette and Brooks; that and her gorgeously breathless voice. --Dan Gennoe
