Shakatak - Under Your Spell (2001) Retail CD
Wow! What a stunning album! For some time now, the shop shelves have been flooded with 'Best of....' CDs and I thought that the bands' hectic lifestyle of touring and recording solo works was beginning to take its toll but how wrong could I be. The first track is THE track of the summer! When I first heard 'Sunshine' my immediate thoughts were 'What a great cut to open a summer Breakfast Show with on the radio' and e-mailed a friend in the industry to tell them to check it out. Jill's vocals are so crisp and boy, do they hit you! What a great, upbeat song. 'Falling' slows the mood downmore… just a bit but Jill's vocals are there to enhance this track. 'The Squizzle' speaks for itself, a unique track that is still funky, yet has that 'new sound of Shakatak' to it. 'Paradise Garden' immediately reminded me of music from the 80s. Similar in mood to tracks on the Mezzoforte album, 'Observations' it has its own calming arrangement with an exquisite piano. 'Under Your Spell' slows down the mood again before we move on to 'Changes'. Track 7, 'Running Back To You' is excellent and has echoes of the Shakatak we know with a new slant on their vocal arrangement. The remainder of the album both quickens and slows the music and the final track, 'Tell Me Tonight' is an appropriate one to close this CD with. It's great to see another Saward/Anderson composition up there with the rest. The CD cover, though lacking in a lot of information seems to be in keeping with most liners nowadays, however, the colour balance and picture do make you take notice of it. The word' Shakatak' is displayed not in the band's usual logo, which, perhaps, emphasises that though they are the same band, there is a certain departure from the norm, a fresh new sound and new material. I have mentioned 'quick and slow' moods in this reveiw because I think that the balance of music is just about right, slow down the mood then pick it up again. Great to see Snake Davis and Jaqui Hicks appearing alongside the rest of the band. Once again, what a superb album and I still can't believe Track 1 - fabulous! Well done!
