Bicentennial Man (1999) Retail CD
This is a by-the-numbers soundtrack, so let's follow the composer's lead. 1) Are you familiar with James Horner's output? If yes, proceed to 2). If not, proceed to 4). 2) Will the presence of only minor variations on material from his scores for Searching For Bobby Fischer, Sneakers, Star Trek II, Braveheart and Deep Impact make for a distracting listen? If yes, proceed to 3). If not, proceed to 4). 3) Although re-packaged into a kids-friendly format, all this musical regurgitation is howlingly obvious. In only the first cue ("The Machine Age") you'll encounter more than enough. By themore… time of "The Wedding", the main theme (which is cribbed from Braveheart) will have crawled uncomfortably under your skin. This theme ends up being the basis for a reunion with Celine Dion in a Titanic wannabe ditty called "Then You Look At Me". Situated at the climax of the album, it will make you think hard about ever wishing to press "play" again. 4) Although Bicentennial Man is basically just an amalgamation of many (mostly) better James Horner scores, it nevertheless makes for consistently pleasant and undemanding listening. --Paul Tonks
