The Lemonheads - Lovey (1990) Retail CD
Alternative Pop/ Rock
"Lovey", which was released in 1990, has been completely overshadowed by the phenomenal success of the Lemonheads' 1992 album "Shame About Ray" and can be described as something of a transitional album. Songs like "Ballarat", "Left for Dead" and "Year of the Cat" are reminiscent of the band's earlier punk outings whereas the rest of the tracks wouldn't appear out of place on "Come on Feel" or "Shame About Ray". Having said this, the songs are definitely less poppy than the later stuff yet are still as catchy, honest and stylish as what we have all come to expect from the exceptional Evan Dandomore….Fans only aware of the later Lemonheads albums may be surprised by the punky undertones of the opening track "Ballarat" but will find themselves back on familiar ground with "Half the Time", "Brass Buttons" and "(The) Door". By punk, I mean by the Lemonheads standards of course, we're hardly talking NOFX or the Sex Pistols here. However, the stand out tunes on this album are the ones which Evan continues to play live eleven years on namely "Ride with Me" and "Stove" which are both probably more successful as acoustic numbers rather than the somewhat overly produced versions which appear here. But come on, how many great songs do you know about stoves? I'm guessing not that many, so this reason alone makes "Lovey" something of a gem.
