Jimi Hendrix - Jimi Plays Monterey (1993) Retail CD
This marvellous performance is not currently available, but is essential Hendrix. OK, so some of the stage patter is embarrassing, but the music, the playing, the attitude and the sound show a man who had something to prove, and he did it with talent to spare. It was his first concert in a country he had to leave to make it, and, as he famously told Pete Townshend, he 'pulled all the stops'.Highlights - where do you start? A great version of Like a Rolling Stone, ("yes, I know I missed a verse, don't worry"); supercharged versions of Rock Me Baby and Killing Floor and a nice Wind Cries Mary.more…Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding provide excellent support, as usual. I don't know how Mitch's arms didn't fall off after this show. The only low point for me is Wild Thing, which works much better on film where you can see the rows of stunned celebrities with their mouths open. It's not really a piece of music, more a sacrifice of a guitar. Jimi even plays a few bars of Strangers in the Night before he makes love to the guitar, assaults the amps and barbeques the poor Stratocaster. On film, you can also see Hendrix playing with his teeth, behind his back etc while playing some great stuff, and you can see his confidence and knowledge that he's won over the crowd.Jimi Plays Monterey is more about Hendrix the showman than Hendrix the musician, but it's an important historical and musical document.
