The Strawbs - Recollection (2009) Retail CD
These live recordings were made way back in 1970.
Normally there is a very good reason why recordings lay hidden away for years....but in this case it was just criminal depriving us of this brilliant transition period of the Strawbs from their folk roots towards their prog-folk From the Witchwood. Rick Wakeman is on board playing what is possibly some of the most beautiful piano work of his career. Listen to 'Song of a Sad little Girl' for an prime example. He even gets a solo piece 'Temperament of Mind' to show off his virtuosity, diversity and sense of humour. In fact he's brilliant on everymore… track, and he's not the only one on prime form throughout. Dave Cousins is in fine voice, giving a mellower, warmer tone than often heard on the studio albums. His vocals are unforced, powerful and emotionally expressive throughout, all the more suprising given this is a live recording...and if wasn't for the ripple of applause at the end of each track you could easily forget this is live. How the audiences have changed since these days with never a single distracting whoop, holler, whistle or scream throughout, and then a second after the last note fades, appreciative applause. The quality of both performance and recording are excellent, and given that this is the only CD release (to my knowledge) of this particular Strawbs line up playing what is affectively 'a best of' from their first 2 albums, with a distinctly different sound to those studio albums, it merited a release back in 1970. That wrong has now been put to rights...and greatly appreciated too. Maybe the only negative note is the lengthy and almost inaudible 'folk club banter' on the last track where they 'diss' The Shadows on their jaunty bluegrass version of the Shads 'Dance on'. With the exception of this throw-away finale this album is pure classic Strawbs. Place along From the Withwood in your collection forthwith.
