Fonky Family - Si Dieu Veut (2001) Retail CD
Even though this CD is three years old it still has the power and imagination to sound fresh and can certainly rival (if not outclass) the American hip-hop output of the time.Unlike its American counterpart, the "commercial" French hip-hop scene has a definite political edge. This is displayed in FF's first album. Revolving around the themes of urban disenchantment, crime and inequality (both economic and racial). The six-piece outfit from Marseille, home of the mighty IAM (If you like Si Dieu Veut get L'ecole de Micro Argent and be amazed), have produced a polished and classy album while stillmore… contemplating the issues that concern their peer group. Granted this not Public Enemy. There is a balance to the make-up of the tracks from the trip-hop instrumental of Verset 3 to the whirlwind assault of "Sans remission" which shows a maturity which is often missing from debut albums, these lads know when to back off. With twenty tracks this is a substantial work, although we have seven "Versets" which serve has a pause for breath in between the main tracks. What Fonky Family present is a hip-hop album a la style francaise, that is to say behind the well-crafted tracks are some barbed lyrics aimed at the state of the country. Evocative titles like "La resistance" and "Sans faire couler le sang", which reaches an epic climax with swirling strings and operatic backing show what the group is about. Finally we come to the only problem with this album, it is in French! I have been lucky enough to spend about 18 months in France and therefore have the benefit of being able to speak and understand the language and the climate in which this album was written. It is not uncommon to see posters for the National Front in major cities in France. For the group, who are all from immigrant backgrounds this is their target and they hit the bullseye with Si Dieu Veut. However, without knowledge of French the message and technique of the rhymes are lost which is a great shame for such a slick, intelligent album.
