Flanger - Midnight Sound (2000) Retail CD
A collaboration between Cologne-based electronic fusionist Burnt Friedmann and Frankfurt-based Chilean émigré Uwe Schmidt, Flanger threatens to be the ultimate folly of muso indulgence. But while Midnight Sound tarries through several genres that casual techno-heads might find upsetting--lounge-jazz, dub reggae, intelligent breakbeat and a variety of Latin musical forms--never do the pair wander too far down any leaf-lined generic path, preferring to languish in the warm, yet funky ambient haze between each style. Despite the fact that much of Midnight Sound was pieced together on a sampler, more… Flanger's undisputed strength is that they keep hold of the organic bounce of Latin music, while adhering only very loosely to its conventions--see the likes of "Bosco's Disposable Driver", which pioneers what can only be called traditional futurism: freeform Latin-jazz, forever undercut with the squeak and hiss of technology. Hardly surprising, then, that the pair choose to cover Miles Davis' "So What" as an album centrepiece--six minutes of strung-out jazz, played on instruments electronically mutated from Davis' original arrangement: instinctive, rather than muso; sensual, rather than accomplished; forward-looking, rather than trad. And that is as good a summation of Midnight Sound as you will find. --Louis Pattison
