Fastball - The Harsh Light of Day (2000) Retail CD
American Trad Rock
Texan trio Fastball share influences and an outlook with a great many of their post-grunge American contemporaries. Like The Goo Goo Dolls, Eels, Cake and Ben Folds Five, they grew up torn between the records they chose to listen to at home (Nirvana, The Replacements) and the records they had no choice but to hear on the radio (Cheap Trick, ELO), and have ended up incorporating elements of both in their own music. It's a difficult balance to judge, and The Harsh Light Of Day, Fastball's third album, finds them doing better than most, but not quite well enough. Fastball certainly know all the movesmore…, but have yet to create something entirely of their own devising: though some of their tunes are kind of cute, especially "You're An Ocean" and "Goodbye", they remind more of others than they make a case for themselves. Consequently, Fastball's favoured breezy AOR power pop rings rather hollow, and one is ultimately left with the somewhat unsatisfactory image of an earnest Jellyfish. --Andrew Mueller
