Fairport Convention - Rosie (1992) Retail CD
This album was recorded at a time when the band was in a state of flux. The last original member, Simon Nicol, had left. Drummer Dave Mattacks left and rejoined, and there was still a gap to be filled from the earlier departure of Richard Thompson. The replacements were Australian vocalist/guitarist Trevor Lucas and ace American lead guitarist Jerry Donahue, both of whom had been members of Sandy Denny's band Fotheringay. Donahue's distinctive guitar contribution is one of the notable aspects of this album. Because of the uncertainties over personnel when some tracks were recorded, variousmore… members of the 'Fairport family' help out. The title track features Richard Thompson on guitar, Gerry Conway (ex-Fotheringay) on drums, with Sandy Denny and Linda Peters on backing vocals. Conway plays on three other tracks, with Timi Donald playing drums on three more, while Ralph McTell provides the guitar picking on "Me with You". Much of the content reflects the influence of Dave Swarbrick, who wrote four tracks and takes the lead vocal part on six. The arrival of Lucas gave a powerful voice which features on his songs "Knights of the Road" and "The Plainsman" - the latter with a traditional tune is one of the outstanding tracks. The whimsical "Hungarian Rhapsody" is a Dave Pegg composition and he also wrote "Peggy's Pub", one of two instrumentals. The other instrumental is "The Hens March Through the Midden/The Four Poster Bed" - a wonderful Swarbrick showpiece medley of traditional tunes which has featured throughout his career. The remaining track "Matthew, Mark, Luke and John" is strong one and is credited jointly to Pegg/Swarbrick/Mattacks/Thompson/Nicol. This is an enjoyable and varied album from a band in transition and which was to reach its peak with the next album, 'Nine'.
