Robin Guthrie - Everlasting (2006) Retail CD
Following hot on the heels of his first full length album -the slightly diffuse and patchy "Continental" -comes this three track E.P. of completely new material. And it's immediate from the first few gossamer notes of the first track that Guthrie has kept his strongest material for this release which is perverse but then Guthrie was always a bit maverick.
Fore-mentioned track "Borderline" is just gorgeous, if I was feeling in a certain frame of mind I would call it perfect dream pop but then I'm not so I won't. A lilting languidly strummed backing is overlaid by shimmering waves of synthesisedmore… orchestration and perfunctory percussion. It music waiting to be the soundtrack for something quietly heartbreaking ...like England's exit from the World Cup. Except that wasn't heartbreaking, just sad and inevitable. Bad example I grant you. Anyway It's irredeemably gorgeous....the song that it is.
"A Sigh Across The Ocean "isn't as gorgeous as "Borderline" but it still manages to sound like it could have come off "Victorialand" or if it had some piano "The Moon and the Melodies". Sprinkled profuse electronics and moderate sighs of atmosphere are suddenly superimposed by those cascading trademark guitars. The sound hasn't changed much over the years but when it's this good does it need to? "Everlasting" is again languorously beautiful and makes this listener think of Sigur Ros, without the epic crashy orchestrated bit and the escarpment scaling vocals.
It's good to know the irascible Guthrie is still capable of producing wonderful music and there is no denying this is the man at his very best. No doubt in six months he will be disowning it and saying it's the worst thing he's ever done. Meanwhile the people who listen to his music will still be claiming it's terrific just as we have always done. As usual the curmudgeonly sod will be wrong and we will be right.
