Bud Powell Trio - Bouncing with Bud (1999) Retail CD
A pianist who revolutionised how his instrument played, Bud Powell recorded at least a dozen albums that can be rightfully be called classics. Probably The Amazing Bud Powell, Volumes 1 and 2 are the essential ones to own. Although this 1962 session, which was recorded in Copenhagen with two--very-- young musicians (Niels Pederson on bass and William Shiopffe on drums) Powell isn't too far behind them. He first started recording in the late 1940s and played with Charlie Parker, after which he was encouraged by his friend Thelonious Monk to go it alone. From the 50s onwards Powell carvedmore… a great big place for himself in jazz history. In a sense, Bouncing With Bud could be subtitled "Recapping With Bud", as the music seems to cover his career: there's the self-written title track, two Monk numbers (one being "Straight No Chaser"), Irving Berlin's "The Best Thing For You" and Coleman Hawkin's "Rifftide". --Phil Brett
