Dog Eat Dog - All Boro Kings (1994) Retail CD
The increasingly ubiquitous sound of the genre-vaulting crossover between rock and rap culture has certainly come on in a high profile succession of rapid leaps and bounds. But when Dog Eat Dog initially unleashed All Boro Kings in 1994, and coincidentally enjoyed a top 10 hit single with the album's pivotal "No Fronts" highlight track, the coalition of hip-hop and metal was still in its relative infancy. Consequently, rather than submitting a seamless stylistic cohesion, along the lines of latter day exponents such as Limp Bizkit and Crazy Town, Dog Eat Dog were presenting a fairly straightforwardmore… US rock sound infected with the merest stylistic hint of rap manners. Whatever, "If These Are Good Times" swaggers with tangible exuberance and vigour, while "What Comes Around" blazes with a brooding dynamic intensity. Vocalist John Connor's strident call-to-arms rapping crackles with self-righteous fury, while the band are simultaneously tight, ferocious and seductive. --Ian Fortnam
