Bruce Cockburn - Slice O Life: Live Solo (2009) Retail CD
A few years back I wrote to Bruce's manager, asking for a live solo album. From his brief sleeve notes, it's clear that I've not been the only one urging this. Finally we have what we've been asking for.
If you've never heard a Cockburn album before, then this is not the place to start. Better options would include: Nothing But a Burning Light; Dart to the Heart; Speechless (for Cockburn's guitar work); or a collection such as Anything, Anytime, Anywhere, or Circles in the Stream if you you're more of a folkie.
There's a few of my all time favourites missing from this album, such as Don'tmore… Feel Your Touch, which Bruce finally started playing again live in about 2003. But that reflects the reality of a live concert, with someone who has such an extensive song list to his name as Cockburn.
What the album does do is beautifully capture some of the songs that have been at the core of Bruce's touring repertoire over the last few years, especially since the turn of the millenium.
Bruce varies in how talkative he is during the course of a gig. I've heard him very discursive a couple of times, but mostly he includes a few anecdotes about some of his stories, and just plays his stuff. Occasionally there's a few people (like myself) who try to get a rise out of him by shouting out a little contribution. This album beautifully captures this element of a live gig, and I'm really grateful for it.
Intriguingly we are given a slice of Bruce's soundcheck, which I like (and Bruce even hints at the possibility of a whole album of soundcheck at some future point - I'll believe it when I see it!).
If you've enjoyed Bruce's studio albums, and have never heard him live (the case for quite a few in the UK I guess), or you're an afficionado who's been to see him on each of his UK tours, then this is definitely one to add to your collection. You can find yourself reminiscing about the gigs you've been to, or for the first time entering into a slice of Bruce on tour. What a joy!
