David Gray - Flesh (2001) Retail CD
Adult Alternative Pop/ Rock
Heaven knows things got even worse before they got better for wordy folk-pop minstrel David Gray. Much like its immediate predecessor A Century Ends, Flesh managed to sell only in trickles at the time of its release and an underwhelmed record company swiftly shunted him in the direction of the exit. Still, in the words of his very own "New Horizon", "Things come too easy, I get suspicious". And judging by the salivating fervency and Zeppelin-esque swagger of opener "What Are You?", an anti-sheep mentality rallying-cry for non-conformity ("Once you sang your own song, now you're dancing to themore… same drum"), Gray was a fighter and not a quitter--we can only wonder if he subsequently used the line "You lost interest, you lost your spine" on his Christmas card to Virgin Records. There's also a fine rocking momentum to the tuneful, should-have-been-a-single "Made Up My Mind" but, generally, this is a more pacifying proposition than A Century Ends, with Gray in love (in fact, he'd recently married) and--as witnessed by such lines about "smelling the heather" and "listening to the ocean's lullaby"--contentedly in awe of nature's beauty. --Kevin Maidment
