Mandator - Initial Velocity (1988) Retail CD
Life always amazed me. Some amateur bands achieving great success although their music is poor. At the same time bands with loads of potential and creativity passing by unnoticed. Dutch metal always got potential, but many promising bands had split up due to lack of attention dutch labels to metal. Mandator was one of those promising bands. I found their first release totally accidentally. Maturity of their music stunned me completely. This band shall be now one of metal titans. "Initial Velocity" is one of that kind of albums which touch deeply your metal souls. Entire release is admirable andmore… reputable.
Production is very good for those difficult times for dutch metal. Sound of guitars and rythm section is pretty good and without reservation. Vocals are too much reverbed like it takes place in early speed metal records but it's not so annoying like, for example, vocals on first Razor albums. All together is enjoyable and sounds good. It's worth to notice lead guitars because solos and melodic bridges are exceptional. Guitarists made a great part of job. Likewise the vocalist. His charachteristic harsh high-pitched vocals delighting "Initial Velocity"
Style on this album is diverse. There are fast songs as well as slow songs. There are dirty fast thrash tracks like 'Attila' or 'Faces of Death', both of them are pure thrash kicking ass songs. But my favorite track from this album is 'Jack Boots and Leather Caps'. This is quite slow thrash anthem. Honestly I hate this sort of songs, but I immediately loved this record and that's says something. Furthermore is very melodic but this is not senseless jumping from one fret to another. This is smart way to express emotions. This is not melody - this is passion. It's getting clear on the last track on this album - 'I Will Be Your Last', slow but stirring as hell ballad. I didn't realise that I could love ballads that are not played by Maidens or Metallica. Until I have listened to this. Lead guitars here are amazing. Calm vocals and guitars passing to high-pitched screams and shredding riffs. All coloured by melodic bridges, themes and solos - in brief: skillful metal hit.
'Initial Velocity' is very emotional but this is not sad crap for emo boys. There are impulsive moments as well as reflection moments. All songs are unusually good and noteworthy. Awesome vocals, riffs, drums, lyrics, solos, melodic parts shall make every metalhead happy. I definitely recommend this album.
