Dave Weckl Band - Transition (2000) Retail CD
It took me a while to spot the line in the booklet that tells us all percussion was played "live" on this album, and this is where Dave Weckl's new technique for the record comes in. In key passages he plays paradiddles and flams with the right stick on the hi-hat or ride cymbal, the left stick on some high tension toms above the hi-hat, while the right hand doubles to play the accented note on the snare. This is very effective in places, though he can drive it too hard sometimes, making the drum sound as a whole a little too busy. Then again, this is a drummers' album so what else can we expectmore…? The whole album is a toe-tapper, but the highlights are breathtaking. Braziluba is a laid back street marching number featuring a drum solo at the end which simply defies belief. Like That is funky, hip swaying stuff, and manages to sound spooky for a while before a joyous and melodic resolution to fade out on. Crossing Paths is an object lesson in just what can be done with triplets, the rhythmic feel switching from 12/8 to 6/8 to 3/4 and back. And then there's my own favourite, Alegria. This track features the most incredible 6/8 groove I've ever heard. All four musicians give their all on this album, but apart from Weckl himself I'd single out Brandon Fields on sax for sheer excitement. Beautiful music.
