Jayhawks - Blue Earth (2003) Retail CD
Originally released in 1989, Blue Earth is a collection of the Jayhawks' early demo recordings made between 1986 and 1989. They had previously issued a self-titled debut album in very limited numbers in 1986, but this is the first mainstream release to provide a showcase for the songwriting of Mark Olson and Gary Louris--a kind of mid-western Lennon and McCartney who brought their bittersweet vocal harmonies and opaque lyrics to the nascent alt.country scene. Still rough around the edges, Blue Earth shows the young band very much in thrall to the Byrds ("Five Cups of Coffee") and Gram Parsonsmore… in particular ("Commonplace Streets", "The Baltimore Sun", "Sioux City"). But also here are two impeccable songs that point the way forwards: the sublime "Two Angels" and "Martin's Song". Both resurfaced in more polished versions on their masterful follow-up Hollywood Town Hall. This reissue includes three previously unreleased tracks ("Fingernail Moon", Two-Minute Pop Song" and "Nightshade"), all effective examples of the band in this formative period. Greater things were just over the horizon, it's true, but no serious Jayhawks fan will want to overlook Blue Earth. --Mark Walker
