Four Seasons - Streetfighter/Hope and Glory (2007) Retail CD
Combined as a two-fer on mail-order reissue label Collectors' Choice Music's series of reissues of the albums of the Four Seasons, Streetfighter/Hope + Glory actually presented the two most recent studio recordings by the group as of 2006, although listeners might have found the music more dated-sounding than some of their early hits. Guided by lead singer Frankie Valli and singer/songwriter/keyboardist/producer Bob Gaudio (who were the only principals remaining as of this point), the Four Seasons always paid close attention to what other pop artists were doing and created their own records accordinglymore…. As pop turned more thoughtful and eclectic in the late '60s, for example, they produced their version of the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in 1969's The Genuine Imitation Life Gazette; when disco hit, they were ready with the danceable "Who Loves You." Although the hits stopped coming after the mid-'70s, on the rare occasions when Gaudio and Valli returned to recording, they took the same approach. Thus, 1985's Streetfighter sounds like music that could be played on hit radio and MTV along with Duran Duran and Cyndi Lauper; it's full of loud, synthesized drums and other prominent synthesizer sounds. Hope + Glory came along in 1992, and by then the synthesizers were sounding a bit more natural, but this was still music made to be heard alongside the latest efforts by Madonna or Color Me Badd. Aside from the arrangements, Gaudio and Valli, retaining many of their old associates, including songwriter/producers Bob Crewe and Sandy Linzer, continued to come up with tuneful, light pop songs that Valli sang in his distinctive voice, albeit without the astounding falsetto that he had used in the '60s. But they were unable to achieve any comeback success with these records. By the mid-2000s, the tracks sounded oddly unfashionable and nowhere near as exciting as the '60s music a group of actors were singing every night on Broadway in the Four Seasons stage biography Jersey Boys.
