Carcass - Wake Up and Smell the Carcass (1999) Retail CD
Death Metal/ Black Metal
Most B-side albums are lazy but in this posthumous collection Liverpudlians Carcass showed that they were not happy just to churn out records with one awesome song and nine cack ones. From 1987 to 1996 Carcass were a band with a huge cult following, and with the dearth of bands nowadays who write anything more than numetal or pretentious art-rock music, they are even more missed. These B sides are less morbid and grim than the subject matter on their first three albums. Certainly the sessions from the last two albums yielded bluesy and rock n roll type songs with maximum air guitar riffage, markingmore… the change of direction. It's not exactly Elvis but with songs with titles like Rot N Roll and Corporate Rock Sucks the band did have a sense of humour at least. The actual music itself still sounds like the music of the albums, just that the lyrics are less morbid. Opener Edge of Darkness is a superb B-side, surprisingly dropped from inclusion on the Swansong album. Emotional Flatline and Ever Increasing Circles are OK, but Blood Spattered Banner is pretty good as well. Corporate Rock Sucks, another B-side from the 1995 Swansong sessions, is excellent, with a memorable hook from Messrs Steer and Amott. Buried Dreams (with the intro from Ruptured Purulence) and No Love Lost are Peel sessions from 1993, and here they sound superb, leaving many who never got to see the band live kicking themselves. There are demo versions of Rot N Roll and Edge of Darkness, which have "filler" written all over them. But the two B-sides of the Heartwork single, Rot N Roll and This Is Your Life, could well have made it onto that album. The last 5 odd tracks are OK but nothing special, some taken from label samplers and EPs. This is well worth getting if you've got any of the band's albums.
