Candiria - 300 Percent Density (2001) Retail CD
Alternative Pop/ Rock
Candiria's debut effort for Century Media, "300 Percent Density", is an amazing piece of music that breaks more ground than a California earthquake. In fact, its just plain uncanny how well this Brooklyn based five piece gracefully meld together Jazz, Math Metal, Hardcore, Death Metal, Rap, Techno, Metalcore and more into an auditory wrecking ball that has the ability to utterly demolish the listeners predefined expectations of song structures and just how smoothly genres can be blended.Band vocalist Carley Coma rockets out of the gate with full on intensity and a vicious metalcore / hardcoremore… approach, busting out his lyrics with brute force and intertwining the occasional rap to change up the pace. As if to raise the bar, It seems as though this time around, his vocal range is based more upon coarse hard edged barks in the vein of say Hatebreed as opposed to the slightly death metal vocal style he immersed himself in on the bands last outing and the end result gives the band a much harder edge. Meanwhile, guitar work is intricate and gritty with raw NY hardcore roots that have been molded into a modern metalcore style, chockfull of belligerent chugging riffs during the groups more aggressive moments, while demonstrating their wealth of talented and technical ability during the traditional jazz styled interludes. The bass however takes a bit of a back seat as a whole, with a keen eye set to laying foundations and thickening up the guitar riffs rather than vying for attention, although the lowend contributions are definitely recognizable and do tend to shine with their catchy, plodding loops, especially throughout the hip hop styled breakdowns and rap flavored tracks. It would seem though, that the percussion is easily the engine of the groups constant whirlwind of musical intensity and the precise hits, skilled jazz overtones and bold ideas laid out by band drummer Kenneth Schalk are enough to leave even the most weathered skin bashers confounded. Not only does this release see the band shifting into a heavier direction, it also sees them honing each different musical style they pursue to razor sharp proportions. With conviction so strong you'd think their hearts were made of cement, they effortlessly piece everything together into extremely accomplished structures that have been fiercely stepped up miles beyond the heights attained with their past works. But not only have they progressed as musicians, they have also explored themselves and broadened their limits as well, incorporating ethnic instrumentation such as djembe's, didgeridoo's, keyboards, sampling, wind chimes and more into the mix, even going as far as having 4 guest rappers on the soon to be hip hop masterpiece, "Words From The Lexicon". Through and through this is easily the bands most rock solid and progressive release put out to date and the title for it couldn't be more fitting as it comes jam packed with everything you could want in a metal release and more, suggesting that this group have put a hell of a lot more than their 100% into it.
