Cancer - To the Gory End (1991) Retail CD
Death Metal/ Black Metal
Most people will only remember Cnacer as the band that gave Cradle of Filth their drummer (drum tech, but overall great drummer Nick Barker, who is currently handling the drums for Dimmu BOrgir and Lock Up), but they did actually have some interesting moments. THe band is from the UK, but added the mighty James Murphy to their ranks after this (I think it might be the first album). Recorded in the 90's bastion of Death Metal recordings, Morrisound, this has a distinct Death-like feel, in the way that the guitars feel that sort of thrash-death that Chuck and Rozz liked to do on 'Leprosy'. Lyricallymore… more in keeping with the gorier elements (one look at the artwork, done by drummer Carl Stokes, will give you an idea), it lacks a little of the maturity of Death, but is not as over the top as either Carcass or Cannibal Corpse. The drums differ greatly from the norm of the typical Death-era drumming, with a more stop-start double-bass click, that sounds like it may have been one of the first for it (probably where Nick got some fo his wierd time signatuers from).Another reminder of how it was done in the old days, so you need to either want to re-live the era, or want to know something about it to really enjoy the band.Highlights include the really close Death styled riffing of Bloodbath, and the interestingly titled Into The Acid.
