Burning Witch - Crippled Lucifer (1999) Retail CD
Death Metal/ Black Metal
If you like Doom, you should own this album, simple as that. From the band that was the stylistic template for current scene overlords Khanate, this is uneasy listening at its finest. The bass rumbles along with subsonic frequencies, the guitar lashes out jagged riffs interspersed with apparently random doses of feedback and the vocals courtesy of the intriguingly named Edgy 59 sound pained and dispairing. The man behind Burning Witch (as well as nearly every other good Doom project around) is the ubiquitous Stephen O'Malley, which is as close as it is possible to get to a guarantee of qualitymore… in this genre of music, though in fairness it doesn't quite attain the standards he achieved a couple of years later with the magnificent Khanate. However, Burning Witch are a bit more song-based than his current outfit, though they suffer in comparison mainly due to Edgy 59's vocals; whilst not at all bad and suitably grim, they aren't really a patch on Alan Dubin's just-escaped-from-the-mental-hospital deranged screaming and psychopathic chattering. Musically, there's not a massive amount to choose between the two bands, though Burning Witch are a little easier to get into. Doom fans should seriously make an effort to get their hands on this album to see how the sound of Khanate came about, whilst anyone else interested in just how nasty it is possible to make music sound would be advised to check it out as well.
