Bumblefoot - Hands (2000) Retail CD
As far as contemporary guitarists go, Ron Thal, (a.k.a Bumblefoot) really should be better known. Not only is this guy a superb guitarist but he can sing, write great songs, produce the CD, and is a founder of the independent studios that produce a number of independent artists as well as his own work. As far as "Hands" goes, it is a marked departure from what constitutes as mere "Good Rock Music" by producing something that I would call "Better Rock Music". Theres a whole load of influences and genres on each song from scat-rap, through funk, be-bop jazz, to heavy thrash. Frequently, Thal willmore… combine several genres at once. This means that you get some variety to each and every song, and increases the CD's longevity. "Hands" is not something that you will get tired of in a hurry.Imagine the Red Hot Chilli Peppers picking a fight with Metallica after eating some hallucinogenic mushrooms in a cheezy lounge bar in Hell's Kitchen. Sorry, it's a poor metaphor, but trying to describe music like this in a physical sense is very difficult. What really sets Bumblefoot's music apart from other more well-known guitarists is his approach to playing. He plays a fretless guitar with a thimble. This can lead to some very weird-but-not-unpleasant sounding lead solos. Guitar fans who think that they've heard it all from Vai, Satriani and other shredders will be struggling to stop their jaws from dropping. The guy can certainly rip it up on the fretboard, but he plays with taste, humour and passion. It's hard not to be astounded and impressed, no matter if you are a muso or a dyed-in-the-wool 100mph shred guitarist.Bumblefoot is living proof that you can buck the trend of current pop/rock music. Just like Frank Zappa, his music is weird and wonderful, humourous, varied and well-crafted.
