Bluetones - The Singles (2002) Retail CD
British Trad Rock
The Bluetones' The Singles 1995-2002 is a pleasant riffle through the Britpop box of snapshots. Those few years spent in the back of the wardrobe (next to a knackered pair of Gazelles) have been kind to the 'Tones. Early classics "Bluetonic", "Cut Some Rug" and "Solomon Bites The Worm" positively sparkle with the carefree enthusiasm of those years and are still solid--these Hounslow gents do actually know how to rock, and often much more so than and without the pomposity of some of their Britpop counterparts. Lyrically focused later tracks like "Freeze Dried Pop" show the Bluetones following amore… relatively smooth path to maturity, albeit not entirely without its pubescent hiccups ("Autophilia"). Fans will be pleased to see the inclusion of the long-deleted single-only tracks "Marblehead Johnson", debut single "Are you Blue or Are You Blind?", and the Internet-only "4-Day Weekend". The bonus disc of cover tunes that appears on the limited edition only highlights the innovative spirit that's normally overshadowed by the Bluetones' good ol' geezer image. Those who kept the home fires burning all along are on to something; this collection hints strongly that there's plenty of mileage in those old comfy trainers just yet.--Leslie Gilotti
