Björk - Selmasongs (2000) Retail CD
First things first. If you have not seen the excellent motion picture, Dancer in the Dark, then go and see it. It will shock you to the bone and you will think about it for weeks on end. It's superbEqually brilliant is this collection of songs from the film itself. Beginning on the orchestrated and beautiful 'Ouverture', the album kicks off to an atmospheric start. The metallic crashes and bangs form the rhythm for the wonderfully upbeat 'Cvalda', whilst Thom Yorke enters top miserable-mode on 'I've Seen It All' (incidentally, if you thought the film version of this song was sad, then thismore… beats the pants off it). Scattergeart follows and dips the album into a full scale tear-fest, yet doesn't lose any of its impact to cliches and tiresome rhythms. A light break then occurs in the form of 'In the Musicals', a majestic musical style track that you can actually listen to without cringing in agony, before the slightly overlong and overproduced '107 Steps' finds itself on the album. But for all these track's unbelievable beauty, they pale in comparison to the albums finale; 'New World' is typical Bjork, mixing electronica and orchestra with optimism and tears at the same time. It is a truly wonderful ending to a wonderful album that, like the film, will leave you emotionally saturated to the bone. Buy it and love it.Essential.
