This album is an absolute beauty. The first thing you will notice is the singer’s very deep and rather unusual voice. But the songs are also beautifully textured and the lyrics are thought provoking. The first three tracks are the absolute standouts, starting with “God shuffled his feet”, a philosophical piece with questions like “Do you have to eat or get your haircut in heaven?” “Afternoons and Coffeespoons” is musically driving but subtle, and “Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm”, which you’ll no doubt have heard, tells the stories of two children who are thought strange by their peers because of physical differences, but then explains that “one kid had it worse than that”, as he was made to go to a freaky charismatic church where “they shook and lurched all over the church floor.” Good point well made. The rest of the album doesn’t quite rise to the same heights as the opening, but it doesn’t dip considerably either. It’s an album for a lazy Sunday afternoon (thinking about God ‘n all), you can just drift along with songs about cavemen and ducks and knights and maidens. The whole album has the tone of a story book, but also offers a lot of reflection on the human condition and man’s place in the universe. In short, I like this band a lot, and for me they can do no wrong. They may not be your cup of tea (nothing pleases everyone) but they’re original, creative, and have a wry sense of humour. If you look for those kind of things in your music, look no further.
