Simple Minds' work from 1979 to 1982 can not be over-rated in a review of post-punk UK music. By far the most creative band of this era they launched their golden period with Real to Reel Cacophony. I first heard this before I was into Simple Minds about 15 years ago and couldn't make head nor tail of it. However, on revisiting it as a bona-fide fan it's obvious that it is a work of huge depth and originality. More than this, though, is how listenable it is for such an experimental record.It is hardly surpising that most of it was written in the studio - it is hard to imagine such a work comingmore…
