When `Bianca' finally arrives, Lars is smitten, refusing to believe she's not real. He invents a complicated history for her and insists she stay with his brother and sister-in-law, as it wouldn't be propermore… for the two of them to sleep under the same roof while not married.

Ryan Gosling excels at turning what, on paper, might seem creepy and weird into something actually quite sweet. We see Lars' friends & coworkers react with shock at first, then quickly rally and welcome Bianca with open arms. They're so supportive that eventually Bianca becomes a sort of time-share... volunteering at the hospital, attending church, having her hair styled, etc. It's a dynamic that both elevates the story and (at times) is its achilles heel.

Finally, kudos to Paul Schneider for his turn as Lars' doubting-thomas older brother. He's excellent here, just as he was is in The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford.
