This may not be universally acknowledged as the definitive album by this German bassist, whose unique electric upright instrument is one of the most instantly recognisable sounds in jazz--that honour probably goes to the classic The Colours of Chloe--but this recording presents Weber in a context which both foregrounds his unique style and offers a perfect situation for his playing. The "orchestra" is essentially a large brass ensemble and ECM fans should perhaps look to works by Kenny Wheeler rather than John Warren for a comparison with these mesmerising compositions, all of which are Weber'more…s own. The warm, pulsing opening track is set in motion by a solo statement from the bassist which sets the scene for the recording as a whole and is also a summary of the most exciting development in jazz bass playing since the innovations of Ron Carter, a context within which Weber's revelatory vision has yet to be surpassed. --Roger Thomas
