Description
Brigade (1990.) Heart's tenth album.
The eighties were an interesting time for Heart. Although the band had faded into obscurity with the beginning of the decade, their self-titled 1985 album brought them right back into the musical spotlight, albeit with a totally new sound. The classic rock group who had once used a combination of pop, rock, folk, and blues had transformed itself into an eighties rock group, who used hard, straight-up rockers and power ballads. It was great to see the band make a comeback. And in 1990, just as the eighties drew to a close, the band released its tenth album, more… Brigade. Read on for my review of the album.
This was Heart's last ditch effort at performing the eighties rock sound. I greatly enjoyed the band's 1985 self-titled album, but I thought Bad Animals was too much of a step in a poppy, commercial, ballad-heavy sound. For Brigade, the band switched producers, and the end result really shows. Keyboards and synthesizers aren't used here nearly as much as on the previous two albums, although they still play a minor role in the music. Not every song on here is a hard rocker, but the songs that do rock on here are the hardest, heaviest songs the band ever recorded. More likely than not, any fan who thought Bad Animals was a step in the wrong direction will feel that the band achieved redemption with this release. Although the album's big hit, All I Want To Do Is Make Love To You, was a power ballad, it doesn't really speak for the rest of the material here. At least half of the songs on here are hard rockers - the band's hardest rocking material, and the other half has a lot of power ballads, but these are some of the band's finest ballads of all. Basically, everything good Heart had done in the decade leading up to this album's release all comes together beautifully here. It was never as popular as the self-titled 1985 album, but I feel that this album is so good that it rivals that album's greatness. In the end, this stands as one of Heart's finest efforts. I thought this album was just going to be the band's last ditch effort to milk the eighties sound one more time and make some profits, but one listen to it proved me wrong! Brigade rules. It belongs in every Heart collection.
Sadly, this album and most of the band's studio album releases are now out of print. This blows, because Heart is such a great band. I am really hoping the material in question gets put back in print, because Heart never released a bad studio album.
Brigade isn't my favorite Heart album by any means, but it's definitely a five-star effort all the way, and if you liked the albums that led up to this one, there's no doubt that you're going to like this one too. Ann and Nancy Wilson are damn good musicians, and this is one of those albums that goes to show just how diverse their musical sound can be. This is a great album, and I give it my highest recommendation. Five stars.
