I guess it's a matter of taste or subjectivity....as always....as for whether 70s Dylan is better than 60s Dylan..but seeing as I got into Dylan in 1983 I may have a different slant on things. I was NOT around when The Answer Was Blowing In The Wind and not around when people were talking about Leopard Skin Pill Box Hats. So speaking personally, this album and its predecessor are the pinnacle of the entire canon of His Bobness. This album is utterly captivating. The stories and down-home performances and the songwriting and wordplay is something most albums DREAM OF. Remember Bob was usuallymore… on his own without a partner to encourage or chastise him, so if Dylan's work over a very long period (1963-69 is comparable with, say The Beatles, that is even more REMARKABLE. But here's the rub: in the 70s, Dylan surpassed all the solo Beatles and ANYONE ELSE YOU WOULD CARE TO MENTION. I rate the albums Blood On The Tracks, Desire and Street Legal as about the best triumvirate ever committed to vinyl. It is STAGGERING that Dylan was able to basically eclipse his 1960s achievements during this period. No artist has done that ever....much as I will defend the 70s work of the solo Beatles, with Dylan you can easily defend these three three albums as being as being about the greatest thing to come from ANYONE. And there speaks a Beatles fan.And so to THIS album: Hurricane is infectious and a great story, so much more personal and uplifting than The Ballad of Countless Joe Bloggs written previously....Isis conjures up an imagery up there with the best Doctor Who story Pyramids Of Mars...Mozambique is simply SUBLIME...One Cup Of Coffee has an AMAZING vocal and an AMAZING lyric...NO ONE can sing like this...Oh Sister is incredibly emotional in every way...and the lyric "Time is an ocean but it ends at the shore...you may not see me tomorORROW" among his most INCISIVE and BRILLIANT lyrics....Joey which is playing as I write this is for some too long but is simply an EPIC story of a hero which sadly the world is woefully short of the like of...Romance in Durango is an oddity which I did not rate on first listenings...but it fits in perfectly in the context of the album.....Black Diamond Bay is about the best and funniest story EVER written, it is as hilarious and brilliantly sung as ANYTHING in the entire Dylan catalogue....it is WORTH BUYING THIS ALBUM FOR THIS SONG ALONE. The reference to Kronkite and "didn't seem much was happening so I went..to..GRAB ANOTHER BEER" must strike a chord EVERYWHERE! And then Sara...a perfect song IF THERE WAS ONE. Sad but utterly UTTERLY brilliant. Who else has written a song about lost love as good or MEMOARBLE as this???? All in all, this album is a STAGGERING achievement from someone who was long past the period where not much was expected from this 1960s "Dionosaur". 1975/6...the era of "Save All Your Kisses For Me" and Disco and early Punk and Abba...but this particular Dinosaur was producing albums of a fantastic quality, oblivious to any of that..and basically blowing them all out of the water, as maybe ONLY A BRONTOSAURUS CAN... Long live his Bobness, maybe it's HIM that should be on display in the Natural History Museum for ALL KIDS to marvel at. I would take MY kids there for sure. And in case anyone is wondering: Mr Jacques Levy YOU co-write the lyrics to most of the tracks here so you certainly share in the GLORY of this INCREDIBLE album.
