Ain't no doubting it--Maceo does best what Maceo does best. Made By Maceo serves up a typical funk fest groove stew planned on the basis that, if you take care of the rhythm section first, the rest is bound to work. When you're dealing with a genre like the one Maceo Parker has so successfully mined for decades now, that philosophy isn't going to take you that far west of right, because there are only so many things one can do with the classic funk formula, as defined by Mr James Brown all those years ago and adopted by Mr MP ever since. Most of the tunes here are from Maceo's own groove bookmore… and give him plenty of room to display his peerlessly passionate way with a get-down melody, but once in a while something else appears on the horizon to demonstrate that our man knows a thing or two about caressing melodies and playing them changes. The instance here is "Moonlight In Vermont", a tune beloved of all balladeers since Bing Crosby discovered snow. That man Maceo--can't beat him when he does what he does best. --Keith Shadwick
