Description
A concept within a concept within a concept, this is the ninth installment in the Bargrooves series of double-mix CDs that pick up where the once stellar Kandi compilations left off, with the finest in sleek club-life sounds mixed to perfection and wrapped in a package of illustrated glamour. Yet this is only the first in the Bargrooves' Taste and Tastemakers series, although to be honest, the difference seems to mostly exist in the marketing department of Seemless Recordings' offices. Bargrooves founder Ben Sowton again mixes the first disc, bringing together a session of light-footed deep housemore… cuts that shimmy down for a late brunch as easily as they shimmied upstairs the night before. Disc two is mixed by Groove Junkies, who offer a slightly more upbeat set peppered with vocal cuts that let the divas wail at full release. For those interested in liner notes, this package contains two sets. The first claiming the premise of this disc to represent the West Coast house music sound. However, the second reveals that the guest DJs are, in fact, from New York, leaving you to wonder if one conceptual thread was left dangling, or if the folks at Bargrooves want to prove that their fabulous jet-set lifestyle has left them utterly unable to keep track of where they are from one day to the next. There is even a mention of London which supposedly previews the next Bargrooves release, proving that they certainly have their marketing strategy well thought out. Annoying because this is quality house music that shouldn't need an entire convoluted marketing scheme behind it. Sometimes it's best to let the music set the mood, rather than the packaging.
