Description

Following great early works like I Hope You're Sitting Down, Hank & How I Quit Smoking, 1997's Thriller (title from Wacko Jacko?) seemed a disappointment- like 1998's follow-up What Another Man Spills, there appear to be too many cover versions (notably of FM Cornog tracks- the songwriter of the great East River Pipe). But it is here where the soulful/gospel sound of albums like Nixon and Is a Woman become evident (see opening track My Face, Your Ass) and this is a million times more on the transcendental soul trip than hyped drivel like The Polyphonic Spree. Your F***ing Sunny Day is the bestmore… song here, the brass and strings coming together in perfect syncopation- the Curtis Mayfield influences are coming in bigtime (though is the "Are You Ready?" a reference to Strip Mine- James?). Three of the songs are written by FM Cornog, at least this will lead to the great works of East River Pipe- though the best thing Lambchop recorded around this period is the album with Vic Chestnutt which had the genius track Until the Led on it. The title track has the same divine darkness of songs like My Blue Wave and The Petrified Florist and the feel of the film Carnival of Souls (quite Michael Nyman/Philip Glass in parts)- it has more in common, sonically speaking with My Bloody Valentine or At Silver Mt Lion/Godspeed You Black Emperor. Thriller is not the greatest of Lambchop albums, but if you have I Hope Your Sitting Down, How I Quit Smoking, Nixon & Is a Woman, it's a must have- with an e/p's worth of Kurt Wagner classics.
